Lutronic Clarity II Seborrheic Keratosis Removal in Montreal

Seborrheic keratoses are among the most common benign skin growths, appearing as raised, waxy or wart-like patches in shades ranging from light tan to dark brown or black. While completely harmless, they can be cosmetically bothersome, especially when located on the face, neck, or chest. At Reimagine Clinic in Montreal, we use the Lutronic Clarity II to precisely target and remove these lesions with no cutting, no stitches, and no significant recovery period.

How Does Laser Seborrheic Keratosis Removal Work?

The Lutronic Clarity II delivers focused pulses of laser energy that are selectively absorbed by the melanin-rich pigmentation in seborrheic keratoses. This energy heats and disrupts the lesion tissue, causing it to coagulate and begin breaking down. Over the following 1 to 3 weeks, the treated growth darkens, forms a superficial crust, and naturally flakes off the skin. The surrounding tissue is left completely undisturbed. The Clarity II’s integrated cooling system ensures patient comfort throughout each treatment pulse, making sessions well-tolerated without anaesthetic for most lesions.

What Types of Lesions Can Be Treated?

The Lutronic Clarity II is effective for:

  • Seborrheic keratoses — raised, rough-textured pigmented growths on face, scalp, chest, back, and arms
  • Flat seborrheic keratoses — thin, discoloured plaques on the face or hands
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra — small, dark bumps common in darker skin tones, often appearing on the cheeks and forehead
  • Lentigos and solar lentigines — flat sun-induced pigmented spots (see our sun spot treatment page)
  • Pigmented epidermal lesions that are confirmed benign on assessment

All lesions are assessed by our physicians before treatment. Atypical or suspicious growths are referred for dermatological evaluation before any laser treatment is performed.

What Does a Session Feel Like?

Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, mild snapping or warmth as the laser pulses onto each lesion. The Lutronic Clarity II features a built-in cooling system that delivers a burst of cool air before and during each pulse to keep the treatment comfortable. For small or flat lesions, no numbing is required. For larger, thicker, or multiple lesions in a single session, topical numbing cream can be applied 30 minutes before treatment on request. Sessions typically last 15 to 30 minutes depending on the number and size of lesions being addressed.

What Happens After Treatment?

Immediately after treatment, each lesion will appear slightly darker or more raised. This is expected and indicates the laser has activated the coagulation process. Over the next 3 to 7 days, the lesion forms a dry crust. This crust naturally detaches and flakes off within 1 to 3 weeks, revealing clear skin underneath. Do not pick, scratch, or forcibly remove the crust as this increases the risk of scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation. You can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. See our aftercare hub for full guidance.

Laser vs. Cryotherapy for Seborrheic Keratosis Removal

Both laser and cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen freezing) are effective methods for removing seborrheic keratoses. Laser treatment with the Lutronic Clarity II offers several advantages for many patients. It provides precise targeting of individual lesions without affecting surrounding skin, making it ideal for lesions on the face or in cosmetically sensitive areas. Laser is also preferred for pigmented lesions where accurate melanin targeting produces a cleaner, more even result. Cryotherapy remains an excellent option for certain lesion types and locations. We assess each patient’s lesions and discuss both options at consultation to determine the best approach.

Will Seborrheic Keratoses Come Back After Removal?

Individual lesions that are fully treated do not return. However, seborrheic keratoses are a genetic condition, and new lesions can develop in other areas over time, particularly with age and cumulative sun exposure. This is a natural skin process and does not indicate that treatment has failed. Many patients return for a simple maintenance session once or twice per year to clear any new growths as they appear. Daily SPF 50 on sun-exposed areas helps slow the formation of new pigmented lesions. See our skin lesion concern page for more information on managing benign growths long-term.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Before your session, avoid sun exposure and self-tanner on the treatment area for 4 weeks. Do not apply retinol, AHA/BHA, or other actives for 5 to 7 days before treatment. Arrive with clean, product-free skin on the day of your appointment. Disclose all medications, particularly photosensitizing drugs (such as doxycycline or tretinoin) and any history of keloid scarring. Do not attempt to scratch or shave off lesions before your appointment. All preparation details are reviewed at your complimentary consultation.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Most adults with cosmetically bothersome seborrheic keratoses are excellent candidates for laser removal with the Lutronic Clarity II.

Ideal candidates:

  • Raised or flat seborrheic keratoses on face, scalp, neck, chest, or body
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra on cheeks or forehead
  • Any skin tone (Fitzpatrick I through V) — Clarity II dual wavelengths treat all tones safely
  • Non-pregnant adults in general good health
  • Patients who have avoided sun exposure for 4 weeks before treatment

We do not treat lesions that are atypical, rapidly changing, or have not been cleared as benign. Any suspicious lesion is referred for dermatological assessment first. A complimentary consultation confirms suitability before any treatment begins.

Aftercare Instructions

  • SPF 50+ daily on treated areas starting immediately after treatment
  • Do not pick or scratch the crust — let it detach naturally over 1 to 3 weeks
  • Gentle cleanser only for the first week, no scrubs, actives, or exfoliants
  • No retinol, AHA/BHA for 7 days after treatment
  • Avoid heat (sauna, hot yoga, steam rooms) for 48 hours
  • Keep the area dry and protected from direct sun for 2 to 4 weeks post-treatment

See our full aftercare hub for complete post-treatment instructions.

Combining Treatments

Seborrheic keratosis removal is frequently combined with other skin clarity treatments at Reimagine Clinic. For patients with both keratoses and sun spots, combining laser lesion removal with sun spot laser treatment in the same session delivers comprehensive skin clearing. IPL skin rejuvenation addresses diffuse pigmentation and redness between laser sessions for broader skin evenness. For overall skin renewal after lesion removal, a chemical peel or microneedling session 4 to 6 weeks post-treatment can further improve texture and tone.

we're here to answer all your seborrheic keratosis questions

Seborrheic keratoses are benign (non-cancerous) skin growths that develop from the outer layer of skin cells. They typically appear as raised, rough-textured, or waxy patches ranging in colour from pale tan to dark brown or black. They are extremely common, especially in adults over 40, and tend to increase in number with age. Despite their sometimes alarming appearance, they are entirely harmless and have no potential to become cancerous. Treatment is purely cosmetic.

Most seborrheic keratoses respond in 1 to 2 laser sessions. Thinner, flatter lesions often clear fully after a single treatment. Thicker, raised, or darker lesions may require a second session 4 to 6 weeks after the first. We assess every lesion at your complimentary consultation and give you a realistic treatment estimate before any session begins.

Most patients find the treatment very comfortable. The Lutronic Clarity II features an integrated cooling system that delivers cool air before and during each laser pulse, significantly reducing any discomfort. The sensation is typically a brief snapping or warmth on each lesion. For larger or multiple lesions in sensitive areas, we can apply topical numbing cream 30 minutes before the session on request.

The treated lesion darkens and may become slightly more raised immediately after treatment as the coagulation process begins. Over the next 3 to 7 days it forms a dry crust. This crust naturally detaches and falls off over 1 to 3 weeks, leaving clear skin underneath. It is very important not to pick or forcibly remove the crust, as doing so increases scarring risk. Results continue to improve for 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.

Both are effective. Laser treatment with the Lutronic Clarity II offers more precise targeting of individual lesions without freezing surrounding skin, which is especially valuable for lesions on the face or near delicate structures. It also allows more controlled treatment of pigmented lesions. Cryotherapy is sometimes preferred for certain body locations or lesion types. We discuss both options at your consultation and recommend the approach best suited to your specific lesions.

Yes. The Lutronic Clarity II’s dual-wavelength design includes the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is specifically optimized for patients with deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV and V) where other lasers can cause post-treatment pigmentation changes. Our physicians customize wavelength, energy, and pulse settings for every patient’s skin tone and lesion depth at each session.

Individual lesions that are fully treated do not return. However, seborrheic keratosis is a genetic tendency, and new lesions can develop in different areas over time, particularly with age and sun exposure. This is completely normal and does not mean the treatment has failed. Many patients schedule a brief annual maintenance session to address any new growths as they appear. Daily SPF 50 helps slow new lesion formation.

Yes, and many patients choose to do so. For patients with both keratoses and sun spots, we often treat both in the same session using the Lutronic Clarity II. IPL skin rejuvenation addresses broader pigmentation and redness. A chemical peel or microneedling session 4 to 6 weeks post-removal can further improve overall skin texture and clarity. Combination protocols are designed at your consultation.
