What Is Microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a handheld tool with ultra-fine needles to create individual, hair-like strokes in the skin’s surface. Each stroke is meticulously placed to replicate the natural growth pattern of your eyebrow hairs, depositing medical-grade pigment into the upper dermis to build fuller, more defined brows.
Unlike traditional eyebrow tattooing which uses a machine and deposits ink deeper into the skin, often resulting in a blocky, unnatural appearance that turns blue or grey over time microblading is a manual technique that produces fine, crisp strokes with natural-looking pigment that fades gracefully.
The result is eyebrows that look effortlessly natural. Most people won’t be able to tell you’ve had any work done they’ll just notice that your brows look incredible.
Who Is Microblading For?
Microblading is ideal for anyone who wants to enhance the appearance of their eyebrows. You may be a great candidate if you:
Have sparse or thin brows — whether from genetics, aging, or hormonal changes
Overplucked your brows in the past and they never fully grew back
Have gaps or asymmetry in your natural brow growth
Lost brow hair from alopecia, chemotherapy, or medical conditions
Have scarring through the brow area that interrupts hair growth
Spend too much time filling in your brows every morning and want a low-maintenance alternative
Want a natural look — microblading is specifically designed to create realistic, hair-stroke brows (not a solid, “drawn-on” look)
Microblading works best on normal to dry skin types. If you have very oily skin, your artist may recommend ombre brows or combo brows instead, as these techniques hold their shape better in oily skin.
The Microblading Process at Reimagine Clinic
Every microblading appointment at our Montreal studio follows a careful, step-by-step process designed to ensure you love the result before a single stroke is made.
Step 1: Consultation and Brow Analysis
Your artist begins by discussing your goals what you like and don’t like about your current brows, your desired shape and fullness, and your daily makeup routine. We’ll look at reference photos, assess your facial structure, and evaluate your skin type to confirm that microblading is the right technique for you.
Step 2: Brow Mapping and Shape Design
Using precise measurements and symmetry guidelines, your artist maps out the ideal brow shape directly on your skin. This accounts for your bone structure, eye placement, facial proportions, and natural brow growth. You’ll see and approve the shape before any pigment is applied — and adjustments are made until you’re completely happy.
Step 3: Color Selection
Your artist selects a pigment color that complements your natural hair color, skin undertone, and personal preference. The goal is a shade that looks naturally yours not obviously tattooed.
Step 4: Numbing
A professional-grade topical anesthetic is applied to the brow area and left to take full effect (approximately 20 minutes). Additional numbing is applied throughout the procedure to keep you comfortable.
Step 5: Microblading
Using a handheld microblading tool, your artist creates individual hair strokes, one by one, following the natural direction and pattern of your brow hairs. Each stroke is carefully placed to build density, fill gaps, and create a seamless, natural result. This typically takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Step 6: Aftercare Briefing
Before you leave, your artist provides detailed aftercare instructions and an aftercare balm to ensure optimal healing and pigment retention. We’ll also book your mandatory 6–8 week touch-up appointment.
Microblading Healing Timeline: What to Expect
Understanding the healing process helps you stay calm and confident during recovery. Here’s what happens week by week:
Days 1–3: Bold and dark. Your brows will look significantly darker and more defined than the final result. This is completely normal the pigment is sitting on the surface of the skin and will soften considerably.
Days 4–7: Flaking and peeling. The treated area will begin to flake as the surface layer of pigmented skin sheds. This is a normal part of the healing process. Do not pick, scratch, or peel let the flakes fall off naturally to avoid pulling out pigment or causing scarring.
Days 7–14: The “ghosting” phase. After the flaking stops, your brows may appear very light, faded, or as though the pigment has disappeared. This is the most nerve-wracking part of healing but it’s completely normal. A layer of new skin has formed over the pigment, temporarily masking it.
Weeks 3–6: The true color emerges. As the skin continues to heal, the pigment gradually resurfaces from beneath the new skin layer. By week 4–6, you’ll see the real, settled color and stroke pattern typically 30–40% lighter than the initial dark shade.
Week 6–8: Touch-up appointment. Your artist evaluates the healed results and performs the perfecting session refining shape, adding density, adjusting color, and filling in any areas where the skin may have expelled pigment during healing.

What Is the Aftercare for Microblading?
Proper aftercare is 50% of your final result. Follow these guidelines closely to ensure your hair strokes heal crisp and beautifully:
Do NOT pick, scratch, or peel: As your brows heal, they will naturally flake and form light scabs. You must let this fall off on its own; picking will pull the pigment directly out of the skin and cause permanent patchiness.
Keep them clean but dry: Wash gently with the provided cleanser as directed by your artist, but avoid soaking your brows in water (no long showers, swimming, or saunas) for the first 10-14 days.
Avoid heavy sweating: Strenuous workouts should be paused for at least 7 days, as the salt from sweat will prematurely fade and blur the pigment.
Apply healing balm strictly as directed: Use only the recommended aftercare ointment in a paper-thin layer to protect the skin without suffocating it.
For a complete day-by-day breakdown of the healing stages, please review our comprehensive Permanent Makeup Aftercare Guide.
Safety and Side Effects
Microblading is a safe, minimally invasive cosmetic tattoo when performed by certified professionals. Here is what you can expect from the process:
Minimal discomfort: We apply a highly effective topical numbing cream before and during the procedure to ensure you remain completely comfortable. Most clients feel only a light scratching or vibrating sensation.
The “Brow Shock” phase: Immediately after your appointment, your brows will look up to 40% darker, bolder, and warmer than the final result. This is completely normal and the color will soften beautifully over the next two weeks.
Temporary redness: The skin immediately surrounding your brows may be slightly pink or mildly swollen for a few hours post-treatment.
Strict clinical sterilization: At Reimagine Clinic, we use 100% disposable, single-use, sterile microblading tools and premium, health-compliant pigments. We adhere strictly to Health Canada sanitation guidelines to ensure your safety.
Enhancing and Maintaining Your Results
Microblading is a semi-permanent treatment; the pigment is specifically designed to fade naturally over 1 to 3 years. To keep your brows looking their absolute best:
Attend your perfecting touch-up: A follow-up session 6 to 8 weeks after your initial appointment is crucial. This allows your artist to fill in any spots that faded during the healing process and lock in the final shape.
Protect your brows from the sun: UV rays are the number one cause of premature fading and color shifting (turning the pigment gray or orange). Always apply SPF 30+ daily to your healed brows.
Avoid active skincare on the brow area: Keep retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and chemical peels strictly away from your tattooed brows, as these ingredients will rapidly strip the color.
Schedule annual color boosts: To maintain crisp strokes and vibrant color, most clients return every 12 to 18 months for a single-session touch-up.

we’re here to answer all your Microblading questions
Microblading is a type of eyebrow architecture. It is all about creating the best shape for each face a totally bespoke approach for each client.
The process is very precise thanks to the tool that is used which is effectively like a pen with the nib being a sloped blade with 10-12 little needles at the end needles that don’t penetrate the skin but just delicately scratch the surface, much like a paper cut.
The needle very finely implants featherweight strokes with a medical grade pigment on the epidermis layer for the skin, creating fine, realistic and natural hair strokes.
Nothing happens to your natural eyebrows as they are untouched by the microblading. It is important to keep most of your natural hair as much as possible to maintain a natural aesthetic.
It can, depending on each person’s reception of anesthesia. However, most microblading places, including ours, provide ample numbing in order to provide clients with a painless experience.
Keep your skin exfoliated and moisturized! It’s also best not to drink or take blood-thinning medications/supplements prior to microblading as this will cause an increased level of bleeding throughout the procedure. Coming in with makeup is optional but not recommended as you will be restricted from getting water on the procedural area for the first 24hrs.
Microblading typically lasts up to about 1-2 years, depending on the skin type and lifestyle of the recipient. If you lead a more active lifestyle, such as regular workouts and sports that cause heavy sweating, you will experience shorter lived results.
