PDRN Salmon DNA Treatments at Reimagine Clinic: What It Is and Why We Now Offer It

We have questions about PDRN too. Here is what the evidence says and why we decided to add it to our menu, carefully.

9 min read

We have written before about the evidence around PDRN, and we were honest: the research in aesthetics is still developing. So why are we now offering it?

Simply put, clients kept asking. And once we looked at the existing science more closely, particularly the wound-healing and anti-inflammatory data, we felt comfortable adding PDRN as a complementary option within a well-rounded treatment plan. Not as a standalone miracle. Not with inflated promises. Just as one more useful tool, offered responsibly.

This post explains exactly what PDRN is, what the research actually supports, how we use it at Reimagine Clinic, and whether it might make sense for your skin goals.

01

What Is PDRN (Salmon DNA)?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a molecule derived from the DNA of salmon sperm (specifically the milt of Oncorhynchus mykiss or similar species). It is extracted, purified, and sterilized before being formulated for medical use.

The mechanism researchers focus on is its interaction with adenosine A2A receptors in human tissue. When PDRN binds to these receptors, it appears to trigger a cascade of effects: reduced inflammation, promotion of new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis), and stimulation of fibroblast activity, the cells responsible for producing collagen and extracellular matrix proteins.

In simpler terms, PDRN signals the body to shift into repair mode. It is not adding anything foreign; it is encouraging the skin to use its own healing machinery more efficiently.

PDRN is also sometimes called Placentex or PDRN therapy in clinical settings. It is delivered by injection, typically as a series of small intradermal or subcutaneous injections across the treatment area, similar in approach to skin booster injections.

It is worth noting that PDRN is distinct from polynucleotides (PNYN), though the two are closely related and often discussed together in the research literature.

💡Key Distinction
PDRN's original approved use chronic wound healing in damaged tissue operates under very different biological conditions than applying the compound to healthy skin for cosmetic improvement. Extrapolating wound-healing data to anti-aging claims is a significant scientific leap that has not been validated in large, well-controlled clinical trials.
02

What the Research Shows So Far

We want to be straightforward here. If you have read our earlier piece on PDRN evidence, you already know that aesthetic-specific data is limited. That has not changed. What has evolved is the broader picture of where the science stands.

The strongest evidence for PDRN comes from wound healing and surgical recovery contexts. Multiple controlled trials show it accelerates tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and improves healing outcomes in diabetic ulcers, post-surgical wounds, and even orthopedic applications. This is not preliminary; it is well-replicated.

For aesthetic indications, including skin quality, fine lines, and texture improvement, the data is more limited. Studies exist, but many are small, lack long-term follow-up, or have not been independently replicated. We are not aware of any large randomized controlled trials specifically in aesthetic use that would meet the same evidentiary standard as, say, the data behind botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid fillers.

That gap is real, and we think it is important to be honest about it. At the same time, the biological mechanism is credible, the safety profile in clinical use appears favorable, and the aesthetic research that does exist points in a consistent direction.

For a fuller breakdown of the evidence, including specific studies, see our PDRN evidence deep-dive post.

The most robust data for PDRN comes from wound healing and surgical recovery. Studies in diabetic wound patients and post-surgical contexts consistently show faster tissue repair, reduced inflammatory markers, and improved granulation tissue formation. This is the scientific foundation that gives PDRN credibility as a tissue-repair agent.

Several smaller trials and case series suggest benefits for skin texture, hydration, and mild laxity. Results trend positive, but the studies are limited in size and follow-up duration. We consider the aesthetic evidence promising but not yet conclusive. It informs our decision to offer PDRN, but it also shapes how we present it to clients: as a complement, not a cure.

PDRN has a long track record in medical settings, including wound care and orthopedics in South Korea and Europe where it has been used for decades. Reported adverse events in aesthetic use are generally mild: temporary redness, swelling at injection sites, and occasional bruising. Allergic reactions are rare but documented. Its safety profile is one reason we felt comfortable adding it to our menu.

Optimal dosing, treatment frequency, and the duration of aesthetic results are not firmly established. Whether PDRN produces meaningfully different outcomes than other biostimulators like PRP or exosomes when used in comparable protocols has not been rigorously compared. We approach these unknowns with honest conversations during consultations.

⚠️Important: Not Approved for Cosmetic Use
Injectable PDRN products are not approved by the FDA in the United States or by Health Canada for cosmetic applications. This means there has been no independent regulatory verification of safety, efficacy, or manufacturing quality for aesthetic injectable use. Without regulatory approval, there is no guarantee of product sterility, consistent concentration, or purity all critical factors when a substance is being injected into your skin.

How We Use PDRN at Reimagine Clinic

At Reimagine Clinic, PDRN is part of our regenerative and biostimulator offerings. We do not position it as a replacement for treatments with stronger evidence bases. We position it as a thoughtful addition for clients who want to support skin recovery and quality through multiple complementary pathways.

In practice, this means PDRN is most often recommended in combination with other treatments rather than on its own:

  • After microneedling: PDRN can be applied or injected post-procedure to support healing in the microchannels created during treatment, potentially enhancing collagen stimulation.
  • Alongside exosome therapy: Both work through cell-signaling mechanisms. Used together, they may offer a broader regenerative signal to the tissue.
  • As a standalone biostimulator series: For clients focused on skin quality, hydration, and mild texture improvement who prefer a non-laser, injectable approach.
  • For specific concerns: Including scarring, under-eye concerns, and mild skin laxity.

Every PDRN protocol at Reimagine Clinic starts with a proper consultation. We assess your skin, discuss your goals, and are transparent about what PDRN can and cannot do for your specific concerns. You can also explore our treatment results for a realistic picture of what clients experience.

💡The Bottom Line
PDRN is not without scientific interest the underlying biology of adenosine receptor activation and tissue repair is legitimate. However, the gap between promising preclinical data and proven clinical efficacy for aesthetic use remains wide. The current state of evidence does not support PDRN as a reliable, first-line treatment for skin rejuvenation. The studies are too small, too inconsistent, and too often conflicted to draw confident conclusions about how well it works, how long results last, or how it compares to established treatments.

What a PDRN Session Looks Like

If you have had skin boosters or PRP before, the format will feel familiar. Here is what to expect from a typical PDRN treatment at Reimagine Clinic.

Consultation first: Before your first PDRN session, we start with a complimentary consultation to understand your skin concerns, review your history, and determine whether PDRN is appropriate for you and how it fits within a broader treatment plan.

The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed. A topical numbing cream is applied and left on for approximately 20 to 30 minutes to maximize your comfort during injections. We use the waiting time to review your treatment plan and answer any remaining questions.

Once the area is numb, PDRN is delivered via a series of small, superficial injections across the treatment zone. Common areas include the full face, under-eyes, neck, and decolletage. The injections are placed intradermally or subcutaneously depending on the target depth. A full-face session typically takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Some redness, minor swelling, and small injection bumps are normal and typically resolve within a few hours to a day. We apply a soothing serum or mask post-treatment. You should avoid intense exercise, saunas, and direct sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours, and keep the skin well hydrated.

Based on current clinical protocols, most PDRN treatment plans involve three to four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every two to three months. We are transparent that optimal dosing for aesthetic use is still being refined, and your plan may be adjusted based on your skin’s response.

PDRN is considered a low-downtime treatment. Most clients return to work and social activities the same day or the following morning. Avoid direct sun exposure, active skincare ingredients (retinols, acids) for 48 hours, and do not apply makeup for at least 12 hours post-treatment.

05

Combining PDRN with Other Treatments

PDRN is, in our view, at its most useful when it supports other treatments rather than standing alone. Here is how it fits with the other modalities we offer.

  • 1. Is it approved or cleared by a regulatory body (FDA, Health Canada)?
Regulatory approval means independent scientists have reviewed the safety and efficacy data and found it sufficient. Without this, you are relying on marketing claims alone.
  • 2. How large are the clinical studies?
A study with 15 participants does not carry the same weight as a trial with 200. Look for systematic reviews that pool data from multiple studies.
  • 3. Who funded the research?
Manufacturer-funded studies are more likely to report favorable results. Independent research is more reliable.
  • 4. How long were patients followed?
A treatment that shows improvement at 4 weeks but has not been tracked at 6 or 12 months tells you very little about durability.
  • 5. How does it compare to established treatments?
If a new treatment has not been directly compared to proven options in head-to-head trials, there is no basis for claiming it is equal or superior.
06

Is PDRN Right for You?

PDRN is not a fit for everyone, and we would rather tell you that upfront than oversell a treatment. Here is a realistic picture of who tends to benefit most.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are focused on skin quality, hydration, and texture rather than volume or dramatic lifting
  • Have mild skin laxity or early signs of aging and want to address them proactively
  • Are dealing with acne scarring or post-inflammatory changes and want a regenerative complement to other treatments
  • Prefer a low-downtime injectable option and are open to a series of sessions
  • Want to support recovery after more intensive treatments like RF microneedling or laser

PDRN is probably not the right primary treatment if you:

  • Are looking for significant structural change, such as volume restoration or significant lifting (those goals are better served by dermal fillers or Sculptra)
  • Have active skin infections or inflammatory conditions in the treatment area
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a known fish or seafood allergy (the salmon DNA origin warrants discussion before proceeding)

The best way to know if PDRN makes sense for your goals is a conversation with our team. We offer a complimentary consultation where we look at your skin holistically and map out a treatment plan that prioritizes proven options first, with PDRN added where it genuinely adds value. You can also review our full list of services and explore common skin concerns we address.

If financing is a consideration, we also offer treatment financing options.

🍁For Canadian Patients
Health Canada maintains strict standards for medical devices and injectable products used in aesthetic medicine. When evaluating any new treatment, check whether it has received Health Canada approval or clearance this is your strongest signal that independent experts have reviewed the evidence. All treatments offered at Reimagine Clinic meet or exceed these regulatory standards.

Frequently Asked Questions About PDRN

PDRN has been used in medical settings, including wound care and orthopedics, for decades, particularly in South Korea and parts of Europe. The safety profile in aesthetic use appears favorable, with most side effects limited to temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, particularly for those with fish or seafood sensitivities. We discuss your full medical history before any treatment.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is derived from your own blood and delivers concentrated growth factors to the treatment area. PDRN is a salmon-derived polynucleotide that works primarily through adenosine A2A receptor activation rather than direct growth factor delivery. The two work through different but potentially complementary mechanisms; some clinics combine them, though robust comparative data is still limited.

With topical numbing cream applied beforehand, most clients describe the injections as mild pressure or minor pinching. The needles used are very fine, and the technique is similar to skin booster injections. Discomfort is typically low and short-lived.

This is an honest question that deserves an honest answer: results from biostimulators like PDRN are gradual. Some clients notice improved skin texture and hydration after the first or second session. More meaningful changes in skin quality and tone typically become visible over six to twelve weeks as the tissue remodeling process unfolds. We set these expectations clearly at your consultation.

In many cases, yes. PDRN can be scheduled alongside or in sequence with microneedling, facials, and laser treatments, though not typically on the same day as more intensive procedures. We build a coordinated treatment calendar during your consultation so that each treatment is timed to complement rather than interfere with the others.

No. PDRN is an aesthetic treatment and is not covered by provincial health insurance plans. We offer treatment financing for clients who want to spread the cost of a multi-session protocol.

Fair question. Our earlier post reflects a genuine position: we think the aesthetic evidence for PDRN is still developing and should not be overstated. That position has not changed. What changed is that clients kept asking for it, and after reviewing the science more carefully, particularly the wound healing data and the biological mechanism, we felt we could offer it responsibly within a combination protocol. We will always be transparent about what the evidence does and does not support. If you want the full evidence breakdown, read our detailed PDRN evidence post.
