Dark Circles
Dark circles under the eyes are one of the most common cosmetic concerns we see at Reimagine Clinic and one of the most frustrating. They make you look tired, older, and unwell, even when you feel perfectly fine. And despite what skincare ads promise, no eye cream on its own is going to fix them.
That’s because dark circles aren’t a single problem. They have different causes vascular congestion, excess pigmentation, volume loss, thin skin, or a combination of all four and each cause requires a different treatment approach.
At Reimagine Clinic in Montreal, we identify the type of dark circles you have and match them with the treatments that are clinically proven to make a real difference: laser therapy, microneedling, chemical peels, and Sculptra. No guesswork, no one-size-fits-all approach.

Understanding Dark circles:Causes, Treatments, and Prevention
Welcome to Reimagine Clinic, your trusted skincare clinic in Montreal. Today, we’re going to delve into a common skin concern that many of our clients face – Dark circles.
What is Dark circles?
Dark circles (medically known as periorbital hyperpigmentation) refer to the noticeable darkening of the skin directly beneath both eyes. Because the skin in this under-eye area is the thinnest on the human body, it easily reveals the underlying blood vessels, melanin buildup, and structural hollows beneath the surface.
Causes of Dark Circles?
The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your entire body, making it uniquely vulnerable to revealing shadows, pooled blood, and discoloration. Dark circles are rarely caused by just one issue; they typically develop from a complex combination of genetics, natural age-related volume loss, vascular congestion, and excess pigmentation. Additionally, everyday factors like unprotected sun exposure, seasonal allergies, and lifestyle habits such as sleep deprivation or stress further exacerbate these delicate under-eye hollows.
Dark circles Treatments at Reimagine Clinic
At Reimagine Clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based treatments tailored to the specific root cause of your dark circles, whether they stem from excess pigmentation, vascular congestion, or structural hollowing. During your consultation, we will carefully assess your delicate under-eye area and recommend a customized treatment plan or a combination of therapiesdesigned to effectively brighten, thicken, and rejuvenate your skin. Depending on your unique needs, your personalized approach may include:
Laser Therapy & Microneedling: Targets congested underlying blood vessels, breaks down excess melanin, and stimulates collagen production to thicken the thin periorbital skin.
Chemical Peels: Utilizes specialized, gentle formulations to safely exfoliate surface-level hyperpigmentation and suppress future dark spot formation.
Sculptra Biostimulator: Gradually rebuilds your body’s own collagen to restore lost volume and eliminate the deep, sunken shadows of the tear trough.
PRP & Exosome Therapy: Harnesses the cutting-edge power of regenerative medicine to profoundly repair cellular damage and naturally rejuvenate the under-eye tissue from the inside out.
Prevention of Dark circles
Dark circles are influenced by genetics, aging, and lifestyle all of which are ongoing. To maintain and extend your treatment results:
- Wear sunscreen religiously: UV protection is the single most impactful habit for preventing pigmented dark circles from returning. SPF 30+ every day, year-round.
- Prioritize sleep: 7–9 hours of quality sleep reduces vascular congestion and fluid retention around the eyes.
- Stay hydrated: Dehydration thins the skin and makes under-eye vessels more visible.
- Use a quality eye cream as maintenance: After professional treatment has done the heavy lifting, a topical product with vitamin C, peptides, or niacinamide can help maintain brightness between sessions.
- Manage allergies proactively: If seasonal allergies worsen your dark circles, treating the allergies with antihistamines can reduce vascular congestion and minimize the urge to rub your eyes.
- Schedule maintenance treatments: Periodic touch-up sessions a peel every few months, a microneedling session twice a year, or a Sculptra booster annually keep your under-eye area looking its best long-term.
- Explore complementary services: Reimagine Clinic also offers laser facials, chemical peels, microneedling, and Sculptra for full-face rejuvenation alongside your dark circles treatment.

we’re here to answer all your questions
What type of dark circles do I have?
The most reliable way to find out is a professional assessment. However, as a general guide: if your circles are blue or purple, they’re likely vascular; if they’re brown, they’re likely pigmented; and if they look like shadows that change with lighting, they’re likely structural (hollow). Many people have a combination.
Can dark circles be permanently removed?
Dark circles can be dramatically improved with professional treatment, but because they’re influenced by genetics and aging, maintenance treatments are typically needed to sustain results long-term. Sculptra provides the longest-lasting results (2+ years) for structural dark circles.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
This depends on your type of dark circles and the treatment chosen. Most patients see significant improvement after 3–6 sessions of laser, microneedling, or peels. Sculptra typically requires 2–3 sessions. Your clinician will outline a personalized treatment timeline during your consultation.
Do dark circles treatments hurt?
Most treatments involve minimal discomfort. Laser and microneedling produce mild warmth or tingling, chemical peels cause a brief stinging sensation, and Sculptra injections are performed with topical or local anesthesia for comfort.
How long until I see results?
Improvement is gradual. Many patients notice brighter, clearer under-eye skin after 2–3 sessions of laser or microneedling. Chemical peel results build with each session. Sculptra results develop over 2–6 months as new collagen forms. Full results are typically visible after completing the recommended treatment series.
Are dark circles treatments safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, but treatment selection matters. The Nd:YAG laser is safe for all skin types, including Fitzpatrick types IV–VI. Chemical peel formulations and strengths are adjusted for darker skin to minimize hyperpigmentation risk. Your clinician will customize the approach based on your skin tone.
Will my insurance cover dark circles treatment?
Dark circles treatment is considered cosmetic and is generally not covered by provincial health insurance (RAMQ) or private insurance plans in Quebec. At Reimagine Clinic, we offer transparent pricing and will provide a clear quote during your consultation.
Can I wear makeup after treatment?
We recommend avoiding eye makeup for 24–48 hours after laser, microneedling, or peel treatments to allow the skin to heal. After injectable treatments like Sculptra, you can typically apply makeup the following day.
