CO2 Laser Stretch Mark Treatment in Montreal

Fractional CO2 for mature stretch marks

People search for stretch mark removal. The honest word is treatment. No device removes a stretch mark, and we will not tell you one does. What the Candela CO2RE can do is resurface the thin, sunken band of a mature white or silver mark and push new collagen into the skin beneath it. The mark then sits closer to the level of the skin around it and shows less on the abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts or arms. Every treatment at Reimagine Clinic in Montreal is planned by our medical director and performed by our specialized cosmetic nurse, and every treatment finishes with exosomes applied into the channels the laser has just opened.

CO2 Laser Stretch Mark Treatment at Reimagine Clinic

Reimagine Clinic runs the Candela CO2RE out of our Montreal clinic, and stretch marks are one of the harder jobs we give it. This page is about stretch mark treatment specifically: what the laser changes and what it leaves alone, and when a gentler device is the better choice. For everything else the CO2RE treats, including facial resurfacing, scar revision and sun-damaged skin, start at our CO2 laser treatments hub for Montreal.

A mature stretch mark is a scar in the dermis. The skin was stretched faster than it could adapt, and the band that healed has less collagen than the skin around it, so it sits below the surface. Creams do not reach that. A fractional ablative laser does, because it removes columns of the scarred band and makes the skin rebuild them. That is the same reason it works on other atrophic scars. What you get is a mark that is shallower and smoother. Colour may change little. It is improved, and it is still there.

Our laser treatments page lists every laser we offer, with prices.

How the CO2RE treats a stretch mark

The CO2RE is a fractional ablative laser. Ablative means it vaporizes tissue rather than warming it, which is how it reaches the scarred band instead of stopping at the surface above it. Fractional means it treats a grid of microscopic columns and leaves untouched skin between them to drive the healing. On a stretch mark, those columns land on the sunken band itself. The laser takes out part of the thin scar tissue and the skin rebuilds it with new collagen. Each session fills the band a step and softens the edge between the mark and normal skin. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery covers the general principles of laser resurfacing if you want independent background.

The device runs four fractional modes. Light works through the epidermis as a refresh. Mid drives deeper for moderate texture change. Deep pushes narrow columns well into the dermis, which is where scar work happens. Fusion combines a superficial pattern with a deep spike at the centre of each column and treats both layers in one pass. Mature stretch marks are atrophic scars, so the useful work sits in the deeper settings. Body skin heals more slowly than the face, though. The doctor keeps the density conservative and builds the result over a series instead of trying to do everything in one visit.

Why we apply exosomes immediately after

When the laser pass ends, the treated area is covered in thousands of open micro-channels running into the dermis. They close quickly. That short window is the only moment when something applied topically can reach the depth where healing is being decided, and most protocols let it pass.

We apply exosomes into those channels straight away. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles carrying growth factors and signalling proteins, and delivering them into open channels rather than onto intact skin is the difference between a treatment step and an expensive serum. The intent is to calm the inflammatory response, support the repair happening in the dermis, and shorten the crusting and peeling phase. On body sites, where healing already runs slower than on the face, that head start counts. There is more on how we use them on our exosomes page.

What they do not do is remove the downtime. The area still weeps, crusts and peels, and you still follow the aftercare to the letter. Our patients tend to describe the redness settling sooner and the whole process being easier to live through than the accounts they have read of standard CO2 recovery. We would rather set that expectation than promise you a number.

What we treat, and what we send elsewhere

CO2 earns its place on mature marks, the ones that have already turned white or silver and sunk below the surface:

  • Abdomen and hips after pregnancy or weight change, once breastfeeding is finished.
  • Thighs, from growth spurts or weight change.
  • Breasts, once any pregnancy and breastfeeding are behind you.
  • Upper arms.

Not every stretch mark should meet this laser. Early red or purple marks are still inflamed and still carry blood supply. For those, a vascular laser or stretch mark microneedling is often the better first step, with no week of healing attached. Faint, shallow marks are also usually better served by microneedling, which needs a course of sessions but very little downtime, and so is anyone who cannot protect a real recovery window. A laser for stretch marks earns its downtime only on marks with depth. Other scars, whether surgical, traumatic or from acne, are covered on our scarring page and, for the laser side, on our CO2 scar revision page. Being told a gentler device will do the job is a legitimate outcome of a consultation.

Are you a candidate?

The people who do best have mature marks with real depth to them and realistic expectations about what a series of sessions achieves. They also have a calendar with room in it, and that matters more on the body than people expect. The area is under clothing, so nobody at work will see it, but you still cannot swim, train, take hot showers or sit in the sun while it heals, and body skin takes longer to close than a face does. Someone with a beach holiday booked soon after treatment will get a worse result than someone who can leave the area alone until we clear it.

Skin tone matters too. Deeper Fitzpatrick types carry a genuine risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation with ablative lasers, and a wide patch of darkened skin on the abdomen or thigh is not a risk worth testing. The honest answer is often a modified conservative approach with pre-treatment, or microneedling instead. Our medical director makes that call at the consultation, and she will tell you plainly which category you fall into.

Who should avoid CO2 laser stretch mark treatment?

You are not a candidate for CO2 laser stretch mark treatment, or will need medical clearance first, if any of the following apply:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. This comes up often with post-pregnancy marks. Wait until both are finished.
  • Active infection, an open cold sore, or inflamed skin in the treatment area.
  • Recent isotretinoin. The doctor will tell you how long to wait.
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring. The treatment creates a controlled wound, and your skin has already shown how it responds to wounds.
  • Deeper skin tones, which carry real post-inflammatory pigmentation risk and need either a conservative modified approach with pre-treatment or a different treatment.
  • Conditions or medication that impair wound healing, including immunosuppression, poorly controlled diabetes, and some autoimmune and connective tissue disorders.
  • Recent sun exposure or an active tan in the treatment area.
  • An inability to commit to strict sun avoidance through the healing period, which on the body can mean keeping the area covered for longer than you would like.

Essential aftercare after CO2 stretch mark treatment

Aftercare is not optional here, and it is not light. Body skin closes more slowly than the face, so what you do through the healing period determines a good part of your result:

  • Vinegar or saline soaks. Dilute white vinegar or sterile saline soaks several times a day through the weeping and crusting phase, exactly as we prescribe. They keep the surface clean, lift debris gently, and lower infection risk.
  • Heavy occlusive barrier. Aquaphor or the equivalent, applied thickly and reapplied through the day and night. Healing skin has no barrier of its own and must not be allowed to dry out. Nothing with acids, retinoids, vitamin C, fragrance or exfoliants on the area until we clear you.
  • Do not pick. At all. Not the crusts, not the flakes, not the piece that looks ready to come off. Picking is the most common cause of a bad outcome from this treatment.
  • Absolutely zero sun exposure. Not reduced. Zero, through healing, then rigorous SPF 50 whenever the area is uncovered for months afterwards, in line with Canadian Dermatology Association sun protection guidance. Clothing over the area helps, and it is not a substitute.
  • Sleep so nothing presses or rubs on the area for the first few nights, elevated where the site allows, to limit swelling.
  • No exercise, saunas, hot showers, swimming pools or alcohol while you are healing. Heat and blood flow make the swelling worse.
  • No makeup, body lotion or fragrance on the area until the peeling has finished and we have cleared you.

You leave with written instructions and the products you need, and we check in during the healing window.

Safety and side effects

Expected effects of CO2 laser stretch mark treatment, which are part of the treatment rather than complications:

  • Intense heat and tightness across the area for the first several hours.
  • Redness and swelling peaking in the first 48 hours.
  • Clear or yellowish weeping in the first day or two.
  • Bronze or brown micro-crusting, then uneven peeling.
  • Pink or ruddy tone over the treated area lasting weeks to a few months. Body sites hold this longer than the face.
  • Temporary itching as the skin knits together.

Less common risks, which is why this is run as a medical procedure: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones or with any sun exposure during healing; infection, including reactivation of herpes simplex in anyone with a history of it, which is why the doctor prescribes antiviral cover where it is needed; prolonged redness; and scarring, which is rare but real and is most often linked to picking or to infection during healing. Call us rather than waiting if anything looks or feels wrong.

Protecting your result long term

The laser starts the process. What you do afterwards decides how long the result lasts:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 50 on the area whenever it is exposed, permanently. New skin over a treated mark darkens easily in the sun, and that colour change can outlast the mark you came in for.
  • Retinoids once we clear you, usually several weeks out, to keep collagen turnover going in the treated band.
  • Finish the series. Each session fills the band a step further. Stopping after one because the redness has faded leaves the rest of the result unbuilt.
  • Lighter maintenance afterwards, usually stretch mark microneedling, rather than waiting years and starting a deep series from scratch.
  • Judge the result at three to six months, not at two weeks. Collagen remodelling runs long after the redness fades, and on the body it runs longer than on the face.

“Meet the doctor behind your treatment plan.”

Dr. Danielle Eiböck is a family physician based in Montreal, Quebec. She earned her medical degree from the University of Sherbrooke and has experience in both emergency and family medicine. As Medical Director at Reimagine Clinic she conducts the CO2 stretch mark consultations herself. She assesses your skin, reviews your history and medications, decides whether an ablative laser is appropriate for you, and writes the prescription and treatment parameters. She also provides the medical oversight for your course of treatment. The CO2RE sessions themselves are performed by our fully trained cosmetic nurse, who specializes in this device and works to the plan the doctor sets.

What CO2 laser stretch mark treatment corrects

How can CO2 laser treatment help your stretch marks?

Mature white and silver marks

Once a stretch mark has lost its colour and turned white or silver, the inflammation is over. What remains is a thin scar with less collagen than the skin around it. Creams and oils have nothing left to work on at that stage, and it is the stage the CO2RE is built for. The laser removes columns of that scar tissue and the skin rebuilds them with fresh collagen, so the mark softens and blends over a series of sessions.

Depth and the sunken band

Often it is the dip, more than the colour, that makes a stretch mark visible. The band sits below the surrounding skin, catches light differently and shows through anything fitted. CO2 resurfacing works on that depth difference. Each session lifts the floor of the band a step closer to level, and the edge where mark meets normal skin becomes harder to find. The mark is still there afterwards. The aim is for it to read as a shallower, softer line rather than a groove, and how far that goes varies from mark to mark.

Abdomen and hips after pregnancy

The lower abdomen and hips are the areas people ask about most, usually well after a pregnancy, once the marks have faded to white. The CO2RE treats them once breastfeeding is finished and the skin has settled. Abdominal skin heals more slowly than the face and holds redness longer, so the doctor plans conservative density and a series rather than one heavy session. The crepey texture that often sits around the marks can improve alongside them, because the same collagen response is at work.

Thighs, breasts and arms

Marks from growth spurts, sport or weight change on the thighs, breasts and upper arms respond the same way. The laser resurfaces the band and the collagen response fills it in over the months that follow. These areas are priced per area, and the doctor will tell you at the consultation whether one area or several make sense in a session. Breast marks are treated only once any pregnancy and breastfeeding are behind you, for the same reasons as the abdomen.

Our CO2 laser stretch mark protocol

01

Consultation with the doctor

You complete the intake and consent forms, then meet our medical director. She examines the marks, checks whether they are mature enough for an ablative laser or still in the red, inflamed stage that suits a gentler device, and goes through your medications and history. Recent isotretinoin, active infection, a history of keloid scarring, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or a deeper Fitzpatrick skin type all change the plan or rule the treatment out. If you are cleared she writes the prescription and sets the treatment parameters for each area. In Quebec that step is the law, not a formality.

02

Medical-grade numbing

Comfort is planned, not improvised. On treatment day the nurse cleans and photographs the area, then applies a medical-grade topical anaesthetic cream and leaves it to work for around 45 minutes under occlusion. Body areas are larger than a face, so the cream goes on generously and the occlusion matters. You will feel heat and a prickling snap during the pass, but the numbing plus the device cooling keeps it well inside what people tolerate. Build the extra 45 minutes into your day, and wear loose clothing you can get on again over ointment.

03

The laser pass

Our specialized cosmetic nurse performs the treatment at the settings the doctor has set, choosing depth and density to match the marks and the site. Laser time depends on the size of the area and how many areas are being treated in one visit. You will smell something during the pass, and afterwards the skin looks and feels like a strong sunburn under a layer of ointment. You leave with the ointment already on and your written aftercare in hand. Arrange your ride home in advance and do not plan anything else for the day.

04

Exosomes, immediately after

This is the step that sets our protocol apart. The moment the laser pass finishes, the treated skin holds thousands of open micro-channels, and that window does not stay open long. We use it to apply exosomes directly into those channels, so the growth-factor signalling reaches the dermis instead of sitting on the surface the way a post-treatment serum would. The aim is to calm the inflammatory response and get you through the crusting and peeling phase faster and more comfortably than standard CO2 recovery, which matters on body skin that already heals slowly. You still have real downtime. It is simply shorter and easier to live through.

We're here to answer all your stretch mark treatment questions

No, and no device does. A mature stretch mark is a scar in the dermis, and scars are improved, not erased. What the CO2RE changes is the depth of the band and the texture across it. After a series, the aim is a mark that is shallower and smoother, so it shows less through fitted clothing. That is a real change, and it is what people mean when they say the marks are gone, but it is not removal. How far it fades varies from person to person and mark to mark.

We use the word treatment on this page on purpose. We have not seen a stretch mark disappear entirely under a laser, and we will not sell you that.

On the face, deep settings mean 7 to 10 days of social downtime. Body skin heals more slowly than the face and holds redness longer, so plan for the surface to take at least that long to close, and for a pink or ruddy tone over the area to last weeks to a few months afterwards.

The social side is easier than a face, because the abdomen, hips, thighs or arms are under clothing and nobody at work needs to know. The rest does not get easier. No exercise, pools, saunas, hot showers or alcohol while healing, soaks and ointment several times a day, and zero sun on the area. Our exosome protocol shortens that window and makes it more comfortable, but it does not remove it. Book against a quiet stretch and keep the beach out of the plan.

The first few days. Significant redness and swelling across the area, and a sensation like a severe sunburn. The heat is most intense in the first few hours and swelling peaks in the first 48 hours. The skin weeps a clear or yellowish fluid while you soak and reapply ointment.

The crusting and peeling phase. The weeping stops and the surface dries into fine bronze or brown micro-crusting with a sandpaper feel. The marks darken before they clear. Then peeling begins in uneven patches with bright pink new skin underneath. On body skin this phase runs longer than on a face, and it is where the exosomes earn their place.

Once the surface has closed. Peeling finishes and the pinkness starts fading. A pink or ruddy tone stays over the marks for weeks to a few months, which is normal.

Months 1 to 6. The result builds as collagen fills the band. What you see at two weeks is not the outcome.

More than one. Stretch marks are treated as a series, spaced far enough apart for body skin to heal fully between visits, and each session lifts the band a step further. How many steps depends on how deep and wide the marks are, the site, your skin tone and how your skin responds to the first treatment. The doctor gives you a realistic range at the consultation rather than a promise, and the plan gets adjusted after session one based on what your skin actually does.

We photograph each visit so the change is judged against where you started, not against memory.

Stretch mark treatment on body areas runs from $500 to $1,000 or more per area, depending on the size of the area and the depth the doctor sets. A hand-sized patch on one hip and a full lower abdomen are not the same procedure.

You get a written quote at your consultation once the doctor has assessed the marks and given you the likely session range. Ask for it to include the aftercare products, which are not optional with this treatment. The consultation itself is $100.

Both have defined roles. Our medical director, Dr. Danielle Eiböck, conducts the consultation, assesses the marks and your medical history, decides whether you are a candidate, writes the prescription and treatment parameters, and provides medical oversight for your course of treatment. Quebec law requires that prescription for this laser. The CO2RE sessions themselves are performed by our fully trained, specialized cosmetic nurse, who works to the plan the doctor has set. You meet the doctor at consultation and see the nurse for your treatments.

Reach and recovery. Stretch mark microneedling punctures the skin without removing tissue, needs a course of sessions, and costs you little or no downtime rather than a week or more of healing. It suits early red or purple marks, faint or shallow marks, deeper skin tones where an ablative laser carries pigmentation risk, and anyone who cannot protect a real recovery window.

CO2 removes tissue and reaches the scarred band directly, which is why it does more on deep, mature, silver marks and why the recovery is real. If your marks are faint or new, the gentler route is the better trade and we will say so. If they are wide, deep and years old, or if you have done a course of microneedling and the depth never changed, that is usually the signal you need the laser instead.

Just as strict. Zero direct sun on the area while you are healing, then rigorous protection for months. New skin after ablative treatment has almost no defence against ultraviolet light, and exposure causes post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A darkened patch across the abdomen or thighs is harder to correct than the stretch marks were, and it can be permanent.

Clothing helps, and it is why body areas are easier to protect than a face. It is not enough on its own. That means no beach, no pool deck, no tanning and no sunbathing for the period we specify, and broad-spectrum SPF 50 on the area whenever it is uncovered once we clear you to apply it. If you have a holiday booked, tell us at the consultation and we will schedule around it.

You risk a permanent scar and you risk infection. The crust is a temporary barrier over a wound that has not closed. Pulling it off early tears skin that is still knitting together, and picking is the single most common cause of a poor outcome from this treatment. On the body there is an extra trap: waistbands and straps rub, and it is easy to catch a crust getting dressed.

It will itch, sometimes intensely, and it will look ready to come off before it is. Keep it greasy, since ointment reduces the itch, and let every piece fall away on its own. If the itching becomes unbearable, call us instead of touching it.

Not immediately, and not when the redness fades. Once peeling finishes the marks look smoother and pinker, and that is the early part. Collagen remodelling runs for three to six months after each session, and it is during that stretch that the band fills and the depth difference shrinks. On body skin the remodelling runs longer than on a face. Judging the outcome at two weeks, or after a single session, is the most common mistake people make. We photograph each visit so you can see the change against where you started.

Usually not with this laser, and usually not yet. A red or purple mark is still inflamed and still carries blood supply, which is why it has colour. At that stage a vascular laser or stretch mark microneedling is often the better first step, and it costs you no week of healing. The colour also tends to fade on its own as the mark matures.

CO2 comes into its own once the mark has turned white or silver and sunk below the surface, because that is when the problem is depth and texture rather than colour. If you have a mix, which is common after a pregnancy, the doctor will tell you at the consultation which marks are ready and which should wait.

The abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts and arms. Those are the sites where mature stretch marks are most common and where the CO2RE has room to work. Each is priced and planned as its own area, and the doctor decides at the consultation whether one area or several can be treated in the same session, since numbing and healing time both scale with the size of the surface.

Two things hold across all of them. Body skin heals more slowly than the face and holds redness longer, so the settings are conservative and the result is built over a series. And pregnancy and breastfeeding rule the treatment out until both are finished, which matters most for abdominal and breast marks.
