Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling aftercare involves gently cleansing the treated area, avoiding direct sun exposure, and applying a soothing moisturizer to promote skin healing and reduce inflammation. It’s essential to steer clear of exfoliants, retinoids, and other potentially irritating skin products for several days post-procedure to prevent complications and ensure optimal results.

Preparing for Your Microneedling Session

Your journey to rejuvenated skin doesn’t end right after your microneedling session at Reimagine Clinic. Proper aftercare ensures optimal results, faster recovery, and minimizes potential side effects. In this guide, we’ve detailed all you need to know about microneedling aftercare, tailored for our Montreal clients.

Medications and Topical Products

  • Discontinue Accutane products at least six months prior to your session.
  • Inform your esthetician about any prescription drugs you’re currently taking.
  • Avoid topical products that might cause skin sensitivity a week prior to treatment, including retinoids, acids, exfoliants, and topical antibiotics.

Sun and Skin Exposure

  • Refrain from unprotected sun exposure, tanning, or sunburn two weeks before your session.
  • Avoid IPL and other laser therapies two weeks prior.
  • Do not wax, use cream depilatories, or undergo electrolysis on the treatment area for two weeks. If shaving is necessary, do it a day before to prevent skin sensitivity.

Anti-inflammatory Drugs

  • Refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen three days before your session. These can interfere with the collagen induction process, which is central to the microneedling treatment.

Special Medication Considerations

  • For those with recurring cold sores, consume antiviral medication two days before and on the day of the treatment.
  • If you’re on blood-thinning medication, consult with your doctor about potentially stopping it a week before your session to reduce the risk of bruising.

Post-Treatment Care: The First 48 Hours

Your immediate aftercare is crucial for achieving the best results and ensuring a smooth recovery.

General Instructions

  • Avoid any activities for at least 4 hours post-treatment.
  • Use fresh bed sheets and sleep on a clean pillowcase.
  • Switch to clean face towels when drying your skin.
  • Do not wash your face for 4 hours post-treatment. Thereafter, cleanse twice daily (morning and evening).
  • Avoid touching your face with unclean hands.
  • Skip shampooing for 48 hours.
  • Refrain from wearing makeup for the next 48 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating for 48 hours.

Sun Exposure and Medications

  • Avoid tanning and prolonged sun exposure for a minimum of two weeks post-treatment.
  • Always apply SPF 30 or 50 before heading outdoors.
  • Do not consume anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen for ten days post-treatment.

Skin Reactions and Care

  • It’s normal to experience redness or skin sensitivity for up to 72 hours.
  • Temporary acne breakouts might occur.
  • Mild skin peeling usually starts around days 3-5.
  • Dryness can last for ten days or longer. Refrain from scratching the treated area.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking ample water.
  • Avoid using Retinol or exfoliating products for at least ten days.

Why is Aftercare Important?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a procedure that involves the use of fine needles to create tiny, invisible punctures in the top layer of skin. This minimally invasive treatment is designed to stimulate the body’s natural wound healing processes, resulting in increased collagen and elastin production. While the procedure is effective on its own, the real magic happens during the recovery phase. Proper aftercare is vital in ensuring that your skin heals correctly and that you achieve the best possible results.

At Reimagine Clinic, we prioritize client education. We understand that many questions can arise about what to do (and what not to do) after a microneedling session. This comprehensive guide aims to address all your aftercare concerns, ensuring that your skin remains healthy and radiant post-treatment.
